Interview by Mike Francis.
I consider my music to be a darker type alternative rock sound. I tend to be a dark (not on a negative perspective) person by nature, hence the darkness and gothic textures in my melodies and lyrics. I speak of everyday truths and try to bring a glimmer of hope in each case. I am also extremely melody driven and enjoy telling stories with passion and I deliver my music this way lyrically and vocally. I also tend to have a strong voice that does not fall into the pop Minnie Mouse genre of vocals so I guess you can’t say my music is not really pop-rock, but it is not hard either. So, I classify it as dark alternative rock. What do you get emotionally from being able to write and record your own music? Complete and utter satisfaction especially when a fan writes me and says that a particular song has helped them or touched them in some way. Sometimes we feel like we are the only ones going through a particularly horrific time and not until we see someone else going through the same thing or acknowledging they have been through it does it become easier, possibly clearer and lightens the burden a bit. I use the term burden because I don’t know of anyone who is troubled from being content and happy. Recording the music is a wonderful feeling because you can share it with others. Euphoria was released in 2001 - when can we expect a follow-up album, and what can we look forward to from it? Since the release of ‘Euphoria’, I along with Keith, have written new songs that I have performed along with the others at live shows. In addition, about 6 months ago, my manager and I put together a full back up band. They are amazing musicians! Keith Pires, whom I also collaborate with, remains the guitarist, Jon Stone, on bass, and Jamie Jensen, on the drums. Combined, we have a dark explosive sound and for being together only 6 months, we are extremely tight (no one can believe we have been together for such little time). To give you an idea of our live sound, we have been compared to Stone Temple Pilots, Black Sabbath, The Pretenders, and Garbage. A most recent review in Gothic Beauty Magazine based in USA compared the sound to a cross between The Cure and The Pretenders. So I can comfortably say that the next release will be more explosive and darker in sound, a bit less pop oriented due to the full band atmosphere. My songs continue to be melodic driven with lyrics that tell stories. There's an excellent cover of B-Movies 'Nowhere Girl' on Euphoria - why did you choose this song, and how did you go about covering it? Do you have any other covers planned? Thank you… I chose ‘Nowhere Girl’ because it is undoubtedly my favorite ‘80s song and to me, it depicts the whole New Wave/New Romantic period like Adam and the Ants. My doing a cover of the song came about one day in conversation. I was working with Spyro Karagiannis, Producer/Musician and in fun mentioned ‘Nowhere Girl’ and how much I loved it and he had the exact same enthusiasm about the song. I was truly surprised, because prior to that day, no one I had spoken to since moving to NYC knew of B-Movie or ‘Nowhere Girl’. I think it must have been much more popular in California than in NYC. I was living in Los Angeles at the time it came out and it was all over the radio – constantly. Do you ever run into any confusion with the 80's 'pop' 'singer' Sabrina - or any teenage witches? ‘80’s pop singer references, not really - thank God! However recently a really annoying thing happened to my artist site at MP3.com. When MP3.com decided to change and updated their website, they somehow made my MP3 address go to Sabrina the ‘80s Disco Queen. And to top it off, I have contacted MP3 since December and they won’t do anything about it. My MP3 website address is all over the internet, even in my press kit, and I’m sorry, but this is definitely not someone I want to be confused with. As for the Teenage Witch, I have been living with that since I came to this country at the tender age of 8. I was tormented by evil little school children who would make fun of my name and call me Sabrina, The Teenage Witch” or “Broom Hilda” and such. Now looking back, little things like that seem so insignificant, however at that age, it was very hurtful. Your hairstyle is similar to Bettie Page's - are you inspired by her at all, or any aspects of the fetish scene? I love Bettie Page, but quite honestly, she did not inspire me to wear my hair this way. It pretty much has been this way for a long time. Even as a child I had bangs. But, it surely has gone through many of colors - red, eggplant purple, blue, and now blue/black. Inspired by aspects of the fetish scene? Hmmmm, I am my own fetish scene, Ha Ha. I live to wear paten leather, the highest heels that can be made (and trust me, I can walk in them, even dance), leather, rubber, all of it… just wish I could afford it all J But, it pretty much stops there, I am definitely not into physical pain – I even hate the dentist! You one suggested that life itself was but a 'phase' - what are your spiritual beliefs, and do you believe in reincarnation?
My
spiritual belief is, do onto others as they would do onto you! To
me, a person knows the difference between wrong and right and to me,
as long as one lives their life to the best of their ability, they
will be fine – period. Reincarnation - I’m not so sure I really
want to go through all of this again J Most definitely a cat! Technically, I should be a bat because I am not that fond of the sun, live in the dark and I am nocturnal… But, I’d rather be a cat that is soft, cute, loved, taken care, and who carries on from room to room eavesdropping on all that is said and done. Who wouldn’t want to do that? What are your earliest childhood memories? 1. Accidentally locking myself in a public bathroom when I was about 4 and not being able to get out and crying my eyes out with my grandmother on the other side of the door trying to tell me to turn the lock to the green color to get the door open. 2. Being about 5 years old at school and being dragged into the showers after gymnastics along with all the other kids. I was horrified about being naked let alone seeing the little boys naked, what the hell was THAT thing for??? Yes, Europe is much more advanced in that respect than in the US (trust me, this would never take place here). 3. 8 years old and just arrived to the US. I was taken to Disneyland for the first time and thought I died and gone to heaven. I still feel the same way now each time I go. I simply love that place and never get sick of it! Long Live Disney, after all that is the home of Maleficent! What are your favourite 3 films, books, and CD's? To narrow down to three is quite hard, but I will try. Movies: The Exorcist, Jaws, Poseidon Adventure (I love anything to do with the supernatural and I am a huge fan of disaster movies particularly ‘Irwin Allen’ movies). Books: Audrey Rose, The Talisman, and Salem’s Lot (anything Dean Koontz and Steven King). CD’s okay, now this is going to be hard! 1. The Cure – Latest Greatest Hits 2. U2 Joshua Tree (but I must also have a ‘New Years Day’ track on the side - it is my fav song!) 3. Led Zeppelin CD box set! Okay, now I have about 100 more I would like to add to this category! Should we go to war with Iraq? I hate war! The saddest thing about war now is the people creating and instigating war never actually get their hands dirty, so to speak. They sit on their all mighty thrones while the innocent fight for them and die for them not to mention the innocent bystanders caught in the middle. And for what, we all know there will always be another tyrant standing in line to take the place of the existing one. It is a viscous circle. If you could visit any place in any time, where and when would you go and why? I would very much like to go back in time to the late 12th century, well after the dark ages. Live the life of a lady - I say a lady because middle class was nonexistent and it was either ladies or peasants so as superficial as my choice sounds, a lady it is. After all, I am going back for the overall beauty, gothic architecture, and especially clothing, which only the rich could afford such luxuries. So, it’s my dream, and I would prefer to be royalty. Why? I have always had an affinity towards this era, a strange connection. I expect it is because I was born in Belgium and was brought up amongst the gothic architecture and such – I don’t know, but I do live this way in my own home, black velvet curtains, tapestries on the wall, candelabras, angel and gargoyle carvings, etc. I guess you can just say it is who I am. Lastly, I would like to ad my thanks and appreciation to you and Kaleidoscope Magazine for your support.
